An investigation into a shooting in the Wright City area that started on Friday ended in the arrest of a 73-year-old suspect who a victim claimed had held her and another woman captive and shot her in the foot, but a subsequent search of the man’s home also led to the discovery of a staggering amount of methamphetamine, according to the McCurtain County Sheriff’s Office.

“After conducting the warrant, we seized four guns and a large amount of methamphetamine,” said undersheriff Johnny Voss, who clarified the amount as over two pounds of the illegal narcotic.

The shooting incident was first reported on Friday around 4:15 a.m.  According to a report from deputy Brandon Stewart, law enforcement was dispatched to Glover Tree Road for a shooting and ended up meeting a woman on a Kubota UTV on the road. The woman, Stewart noted, had what appeared to be a gunshot wound in the bottom of her left foot, with an exit wound in her heel.

EMS was contact to provide medical assistance to the woman.  The victim told deputies that her boyfriend, the 73-year-old, had shot her several hours earlier and had refused to let her leave the house.

Another woman, she said, had also been held captive at the residence, but the suspect had allowed her to leave earlier in the day – in the victim’s pickup.

She said the suspect –  a convicted felon – had pistols, shotguns and rifles at his residence.

The woman was transported to Paris Regional Hospital in Paris, Texas.  Paris police officers interviewed the woman, who they said had been disoriented but said that the suspect had been threatening to kill her and later shot her in the foot, telling her that she “would feel even worse after she was shot in the shin.”

The victim also said the suspect threatened to cut her face with a razor blade. She had escaped the home after the man fell asleep by climbing out a window.

The shooting itself was reported in this weekend edition of the newspaper, but the investigation into the incident was still in the early stages.  Deputies said that they obtained a night-time warrant (typically requested when a suspect is believed to be dangerous) in order to search for the firearms.

Deputies conducted the warrant service on Friday night, according to Voss, and indeed found four firearms on the premises. But they also discovered a large quantity of narcotics and around $13,000 in cash.  Sgt. Brock Timms went to obtain an additional warrant, allowing the MCSO to seize the suspected meth and the cash.

The 73-year-old suspect was home when the warrant was served, deputies said, and was arrested for the shooting incident. Investigators said that additional charges related to the narcotics and firearms will be requested.

Voss said deputies involved in the investigation, in addition to Stewart and Timms, included Sgt. James Revada, Sgt. Alvin Moss and deputy Chris Watson.
